Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles (30–150 nm) secreted by cells, containing RNA and proteins, and are abundantly present in body fluids such as blood, saliva, urine, and milk. Exosomes are believed to function as intercellular messengers, transferring effectors or signaling molecules between specific cells. However, their structure, molecular cargo, and biological pathways remain only partially understood.
In studying the biological functions of exosomes, it is essential to isolate intact vesicle particles. Traditional ultracentrifugation methods are often time-consuming, equipment-dependent, and technically demanding.
